Additive Manufacturing (AM) removes the manufacturing process constraints that dominate in casting or forging and machining.

This enables free-form design which results in lighter structures or structures with maximum functionality. There is a major need for new design tools, underpinned by a fundamental understanding of the technology, which will allow the full free-form nature of AM to be implemented by industry in both component and process design.
